Parking boost for city centre employees

The new bays will be available from December 7 and will be clearly marked with a black and red dotted line.

They are located in convenient areas close to offices and the main shopping areas of the city centre.

Employees with all forms of employee permit, including RingGO, car share and scratch cards, will be able to use the premium spaces between Monday and Friday.

The spaces are also available to permit non-holders, who will have to pay the premium parking rate.

Cllr Matt Clifton, cabinet member with responsibility for Parking said, “This is an example of ‘You said, we listened’. The public told us that they wanted more parking spaces in CMK for staff who work there and I am delighted that we have been able to deliver on this.

“We must also address the parking needs of the future, including additional multi-storey, decked parking areas and parking sensors, as well as alternative, greener transport options such as electric vehicles and improved public transport.”

The additional spaces are being made available as a result of the budget consultation from December 2014-January 2015 when employees who work in the city centre provided a number of suggestions about how parking could be improved for them.

Other changes are already in place such as the 9:15am parking spaces for those who have child care commitments but need to park in the city centre after 9am as well as the free Park and Shop bays around the shopping centres.

The new spaces are in addition to the 234 spaces that became available in May. A further 235 spaces are to be created next year.

The council has stressed that there will be no change to the existing published parking tariffs.

During the last Budget Consultation officers received a significant number of comments from the public suggesting that underutilised premium red bays should be changed to standard purple bays to accommodate the high demand for employee parking in CMK.

Shoppers can still park on one of the 10,374 spaces across CMK or use the Theatre Multi-Storey car park which is only 15p per hour.
