Milton Keynes tourism is worth £413m and supports more than 14,000 jobs, new figures show, as Tourism Week highlights the strength of the city’s visitor economy.

The latest report, commissioned by Destination Milton Keynes, shows day trips are the main driver of activity. They generated more than £279m in visitor spend, underlining the importance of short visits to the local economy.

The data also reflects the city’s growing appeal for city breaks. Milton Keynes has strengthened its position as a destination for retail, leisure and entertainment, attracting domestic visitors looking for accessible short stays.

The value of MK tourism has increased by 89% since the last study in 2018. As a result, the sector has not only recovered but expanded significantly.

Tourism jobs remain a key part of that growth. More than 14,000 roles are supported across retail, accommodation, hospitality and visitor attractions, despite wider pressures on the leisure sector.

However, the report highlights an opportunity to increase hotel stays. While day trips dominate, encouraging more overnight visits would help grow visitor spend further and extend economic impact.

Andrew Kirby, general manager at Destination Milton Keynes, said the figures show a strong foundation for future growth. He said the organisation aims to raise the profile of MK tourism across local, regional and national audiences, while increasing visits and supporting more tourism jobs.

Shanika Mahendran, cabinet member for planning and placemaking at Milton Keynes City Council, said the figures reflect the city’s ambition. She said tourism is creating jobs, adding vibrancy and helping to drive continued growth across Milton Keynes.

Looking ahead, Destination Milton Keynes will work with the council and partners to build on this momentum. The focus will be on attracting more visitors, increasing hotel stays and strengthening the long-term value of MK tourism.
