The A509 between Newport Pagnell and Junction 14 of the M1 has reopened after almost two years, restoring a key transport link for residents, commuters, and local businesses.
The road, which was closed in September 2023 to allow for works on the Milton Keynes East development site, was originally expected to reopen within a year. Delays meant the closure lasted nearly two years, causing congestion and disruption across the town.
Local businesses, particularly those relying on the M1 for logistics and trade, are expected to benefit immediately from the improved connectivity. The reopening also eases pressure on surrounding routes that have carried diverted traffic during the closure.
Community leaders welcomed the news, saying the road is essential for Newport Pagnell’s economy and daily life. “The A509 is a vital route into Newport Pagnell. Its closure hurt local businesses and caused daily disruption,” said councillor Jane Carr, who represents Newport Pagnell South. “People across the town will be glad to see it open at last.”
Fellow ward councillor Tony Oyakhire added that while the reopening was positive, the extended delays had caused frustration.
The A509 reopening is expected to ease congestion, improve access to Junction 14 of the M1, and strengthen links between Newport Pagnell and Milton Keynes.
