A full-size dragon boat will arrive in Central Milton Keynes this month as organisers build momentum for the Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival returning to Willen Lake in July 2026.
The 30-foot vessel will be on display at centre:mk on Saturday 11 April, giving visitors and local businesses a hands-on preview of the Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival. The event runs from 9am to 7pm outside Footasylum and aims to drive early entries and charity fundraising.
Organisers NewWave Events say the activation offers a rare chance to step inside a traditional dragon boat, complete with a carved dragon head and drum. Visitors can take photos, try the drummer’s position and speak directly to organisers about entering a team.
Alicja Green, executive director at NewWave Events, said the event is designed to bring the experience into the city centre. “We’re excited to bring a full-sized dragon boat to centre:mk. It’s not every day you can step inside one and get a feel for race day. Businesses can see exactly what’s involved and start planning their team,” said Alicja.
In addition, the showcase will include interactive elements such as a ‘Hook a Dragon’ competition, where visitors can win instant prizes. This activity is expected to attract families while also introducing the team-based fundraising concept behind the event.
The Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival is open to businesses of all sizes. Teams of up to 11 people will race over a 200-metre course at Willen Lake on Saturday 4 July 2026. The event combines competition with networking and team building, making it a popular fixture in the Milton Keynes business events calendar.
Importantly, each team can choose its own charity. Local organisations already linked to the Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival include Willen Hospice, MK Food Bank, Harry’s Rainbow and YMCA. As a result, the event supports a wide range of community causes across Milton Keynes.
Alicja added that early engagement helps businesses plan ahead. “This is a simple way for companies to support a local charity while also building stronger teams. The atmosphere on race day is something people remember long after the event,” she said.
