Universal Destinations & Experiences has begun hiring for its proposed theme park and resort in Bedford — a major milestone following government approval of the project earlier this year.

The entertainment giant, part of NBCUniversal, has posted its first recruitment call for technical management roles linked to the Bedford destination, marking the start of a new phase in the multi-billion-pound investment.

The role of Senior Manager, Ride & Show Engineering involves time spent at Universal Creative’s global headquarters in Orlando, Florida, and at the Bedford site, where successful candidates will oversee the design, production and installation of ride and show systems.

The position — one of the first linked directly to the project — underlines the company’s commitment to advancing the UK’s first Universal-branded theme park and resort, which is expected to open in 2031 (subject to planning approval).

Once completed, the development will create around 28,000 jobs and attract up to 12 million visitors a year, transforming the region’s tourism and leisure economy.

Justin Richardson, chief executive of Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce, said earlier this year that Universal’s plans represented “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Bedford”, while Bedford Borough’s Mayor Tom Wootton described the investment as a “landmark moment” for the region.

The project, set on a 476-acre site at Kempston Hardwick, will feature multiple themed lands, a 500-room hotel and a dining, retail and entertainment complex.

Universal has pledged to ensure that around 80 per cent of the workforce will be recruited from Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes, supported by new training and career pathways developed with local partners.

Industry observers say the early recruitment activity is a strong signal of momentum. It comes as Universal Destinations & Experiences continues pre-planning and consultation work with local and national stakeholders.
