Willen Hospice is set to open a new charity clearance shop in Stacey Bushes, introducing a different retail model to the Milton Keynes retail landscape. The store will operate as a fast-paced clearance outlet, designed to give unsold donated items a final opportunity to be sold before being recycled.

The new shop represents a first for Willen Hospice in Milton Keynes and forms part of a wider move to reduce waste while generating vital income for its specialist palliative care services. By focusing on affordability and high stock turnover, the charity aims to attract repeat visits and reach new customers.

The Stacey Bushes store will use a simple pricing structure, with all items sold at £1, £3 or £5. Stock will be refreshed several times a week, creating a constantly changing offer and a “treasure hunt” style shopping experience. As a result, the shop is expected to operate at a quicker pace than traditional charity shops.

Sustainability is central to the concept. Items that have not sold through other Willen Hospice shops will be redirected to the clearance store, extending their lifespan and reducing the volume sent for recycling. Consequently, the model supports circular economy principles while maximising income from donated goods.

Ian Palmer, associate director of retail at Willen Hospice, said the shop signals a shift in how charity retail can work locally. “A retail revolution is coming to MK. We’re launching something bold, fresh and sustainable that gives unsold items one last chance to find a home before recycling. This isn’t just a shop – it’s innovation in action.”

Alongside the launch, Willen Hospice is recruiting a full-time Shop Manager to lead the new store. The role will involve setting up and running day-to-day operations, driving sales performance and managing stock flow in a high-turnover environment. In addition, the Shop Manager will lead a team including an Assistant Manager, Sales Assistant and volunteers.

The position is based in Stacey Bushes and offers a salary of £26,300 per annum, depending on experience, for 37.5 hours per week including weekends. While charity retail experience is beneficial, the charity is also keen to hear from managers with backgrounds in fast-paced commercial retail.

Willen Hospice provides specialist palliative care for people with life-limiting illnesses across the Milton Keynes area, supporting patients both at home and within its In-Patient Unit. Income from its growing retail portfolio plays a key role in keeping care free of charge.

The role will remain open until filled, subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check. Further details are available via the Willen Hospice careers website.
