Milton Keynes-based EMW Law is set to strengthen its regional presence after confirming a merger with Penman Sedgwick Solicitors, one of Hertfordshire’s longest-established legal firms.
The merger will take effect on 31 March, with Penman Sedgwick becoming part of EMW Law LLP. The move brings together two firms with a shared emphasis on clear, practical legal advice and a strong people-first culture.
EMW Law, which has its head office in Knowlhill, Milton Keynes, operates across several locations including Northampton, Watford, London and Brighton. The firm provides a broad mix of business and personal legal services, ranging from corporate and commercial property work to private client and family law.
Founded in 1836, Penman Sedgwick has been part of the professional fabric of Watford and Hertfordshire for nearly two centuries. Its long-standing reputation has been built on trusted client relationships, technical expertise and a commitment to straightforward, plain-English advice.
James Geary, managing partner at EMW Law, said the merger felt like a natural step for both firms. “This is one of those moments that just feels right,” he said. “We share a belief in clear, practical, client-focused advice and, just as importantly, a strong cultural alignment around how we work and how we treat people.”
He added that Penman Sedgwick’s heritage was a key factor. “That sort of longevity doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from deep local roots, trusted relationships and a genuine commitment to clients.”
For EMW, the merger represents a further step in strengthening its growing presence in Hertfordshire, while remaining firmly anchored in Milton Keynes. The combined firm will benefit from greater depth across core practice areas, as well as broader resources to support clients as their legal needs evolve.
Geary said the focus remained firmly on people. “This merger is about people first – our clients and our colleagues – and creating something even stronger together,” he said. “I’m delighted to be welcoming Claire Miller, Caroline Kernanec, Stuart Mercer and the entire Penman Sedgwick team into EMW.”
For existing clients of both firms, the message is continuity rather than change. Client relationships will remain in place, supported by an expanded team and wider specialist expertise. According to EMW, it will be “business as usual”, with the same local contacts and service standards.
The merger also aligns with EMW’s broader positioning as a B Corp-certified law firm, balancing commercial advice with a strong ethical and cultural framework.
