A historic 17th century chapel in Stony Stratford is set to be transformed into a new restaurant and bar concept after the site, formerly occupied by Calcutta Brasserie, was taken on by a new ownership team.

The venue will reopen as Chapel Chophouse & Bar, with plans for a high-end steakhouse and entertainment-led dining destination that aims to retain the building’s heritage features while introducing a contemporary interior.

The project is being led by joint owner Leigh Strathearn, who said the business wanted to create something different for the area.

“A traditional chophouse is a classic style of restaurant that focuses on high-quality meat, especially steaks and chops. There’s nothing like it in the area,” Leigh said.

Leigh, who also leads Perception PR and is involved with venues including Maaya Indian Kitchen & Bar and Blossom Room, said the team had been considering the site for some time.

“I’ve known the venue for many years and it’s been an ambition of mine to turn this beautiful building into a high-end restaurant and bar,” he said.

“We are fully committed to respecting its unique features and heritage while introducing a stylish and contemporary feel throughout. Chapel will offer something distinctive, not just in terms of food and drink, but in the overall dining experience.”

Plans for the interior include a raised central bar, leather booth seating and separate spaces designed for both casual drinks and more formal dining. An elevated stage area will also host live music and entertainment.

The kitchen operation will be led by head chef and partner Chris Batsi, who brings more than a decade of hospitality experience to the project.

“My two main focuses are the quality of the food and the consistency of service for each dish, alongside maintaining an immaculate kitchen,” Chris said. “I have very high standards and won’t accept anything less.”

The business said the menu will focus on premium British produce, with further details expected ahead of the launch.

Chapel Chophouse & Bar is scheduled to open in summer 2026.
