As conversations around workplace wellbeing continue to grow, one Milton Keynes business is seeing first-hand how investing in personal wellbeing is becoming part of the wider business conversation.
Clarity of Sight, based at Milton Keynes Business Centre, has expanded steadily since opening its first studio there in 2020. Founded by Penny Alterskye and her husband after initially launching as an online crystal retailer, the business now offers complementary therapies, professional training and wellbeing courses to clients from across the region and beyond.
Penny says her client base reflects the changing pressures facing today’s workforce. Everyone from apprentices and teachers to business owners, accountants, lawyers, healthcare professionals and chief executives now visits the practice, with some international clients booking appointments whenever they return to the UK.
“The biggest challenge people bring to me is stress,” Penny explained. “That might be workplace pressure, running a business, family commitments or burnout. More recently, I’ve seen an increase in people looking for support as they return to work after periods of long-term stress or significant life changes.”
Drawing on more than 25 years working in corporate environments herself, Penny understands the pressures many professionals face. She believes that making time for self-care can help people feel more focused, confident and resilient in both their personal and professional lives.
She has also noticed a significant shift since the pandemic.
“Covid changed the way many people worked,” she said. “For some, returning to the workplace after several years at home was a difficult emotional transition. Since then, many clients have become much more proactive about looking after their wellbeing, choosing regular appointments rather than waiting until they’re overwhelmed.”
As demand increased, Clarity of Sight outgrew its original premises and moved into a larger unit at Milton Keynes Business Centre in late 2024. The expanded premises provide a dedicated treatment room alongside a flexible training space, allowing the business to introduce more courses and host an annual two-day non-residential retreat.
Penny, who has been teaching since 2011, delivers accredited Reiki Practitioner Diploma courses alongside classes in colour therapy, crystals and other complementary practices. Her students include people seeking a complete career change, those developing a side business and established therapists looking to broaden their professional skills.
The flexibility of the accommodation at Milton Keynes Business Centre has enabled the business to evolve alongside its growing client base. Moving into a larger unit gave Penny and her husband the space to create separate treatment and training areas, allowing them to expand their services while maintaining a welcoming environment for clients.
She believes the wellbeing agenda is becoming increasingly important for employers as organisations look to retain talented people and support healthy workplace cultures.
“Employees are the heart of any business,” said Penny. “When people feel supported, motivated and able to manage stress, they are more likely to thrive. Looking after wellbeing isn’t simply about the individual – it benefits the whole organisation.”
