The investment aims to rejuvenate the site and includes a new building that will offer teaching, dance studios, informal learning spaces and a new student services hub.
Plans include demolishing two teaching and staff buildings and replacing them with a new three-storey building. In addition, the current sports halls on the site will be refurbished and extended to bring them up to national championship standards.
Building plans were submitted to Bedford Borough Council earlier this month for approval and were put before residents last night (Monday) at a public presentation.
University’s vice chancellor Bill Rammell said: “These investments are a fantastic opportunity to further develop the working and learning environment to better support the students with some of the most advanced facilities in the country.”
The Bedford scheme is the latest chapter of building enhancements planned by the University which will see a further £160 million invested into the infrastructure over the next seven years.
Mr Rammell added: “The university is very much moving forward to provide all our students with the very best opportunities and experience to compete and succeed in the challenging Higher Education world.”
If plans are approved, work will start this summer and the new centre is expected to open in early 2015.
