Support your local small businesses, says garage owner at start of Small Business Fortnight

Dec 02, 2013

Quality Car Service in Bletchley is one of many local companies taking part in the first ever UK Small Business Saturday.
The event, on December 7, is promoting small businesses up and down the country and highlights the importance of supporting independent businesses that are part of their local communities. It takes place as part of the Small Business Fortnight initiative developed locally by Milton Keynes Council.
Research has shown that for every £10 spent locally, an additional £25 is invested back into the economy and independent businesses are the biggest generators of jobs in the UK.
Just as small independent businesses will look to local suppliers for a personal and quality service, they should also be considering utilising their local independent garage as a vital business supplier, according to Quality Car Service owner Chris Gurney (pictured).
He says: “The sheer amount of garages currently operating in the UK means that, in order to stay ahead of their game, independent garages are successfully adapting, innovating and evolving. They are doing this by understanding what it takes to run a garage as a business.”
Quality Car Service, which Mr Gurney opened five years ago, is a member of the Trust My Garage scheme that ensures its garages are run properly with a strict code of practice.
“We see ourselves as an efficient small to medium enterprise and we run ourselves accordingly,” says Mr Gurney. “We work hard as a small business to retain our skilled staff and regularly review our business processes and HR policy, just like any other independent business.
“We also regularly review our business plan so that we stay competitive and I believe this is a vital element of running an independent garage, especially in the current climate.”
Quality Cars has been training its technicians on the latest industry technology being fitted to today’s cars, including diesel particulate filters, EGR valves and Variable Geometry Turbo Chargers.
Mr Gurney says: “A successful business needs the right people and a garage is no different. Just like any other business, we need to make sure that our staff are always fully trained and up to date with the changes in our industry.
“We want to deliver the best service to local people and local businesses, just like any small business supplier. Independent garages have as much a role to play in the independent business community as other firms and we are working to demonstrate this to the Milton Keynes business community.”
