Help hospital’s £200,000 children’s ward appeal

Feb 13, 2014

Leo’s Appeal aims to create enhanced facilities for families and carers, as well as young patients, and buy new play equipment.
The hospital treats 36,000 children every year and the appeal organisers have called on businesses to rally to the cause.
Launched in September, Leo’s Appeal has already raised £10,000 and three Milton Keynes businesses – DoubleTree by Hilton hotel, commercial property consultancy Bidwells and specialist medical recruitment agency National Locums – have made the appeal their charity of the year.
Hospital charity fundraising manager Vanessa Holmes said: “We want as many corporates on board as possible. It is a local appeal and more people are coming round to supporting a local charity.”
The busy wards need updating to be even more child- and family-friendly. Leo’s Appeal aims to put a reclining chair by every bed so parents can stay by their child’s side and to provide special toys to hep young patients with more complex needs.
The appeal also aims to raise enough to buy essential medical equipment.
Vanessa said: “The care is great and we get positive feedback but the environment needs updating and developing and our NHS budget will not fund it so we have to fundraise to deliver that which is not covered by the NHS budget.”
Grant giving bodies are also helping with funds, including the Echo Trust, set up by the Milton Keynes-based Luminar group, which last year gave £50,000 to pay for two ventilators for the hospital’s neo-natal unit.
“Companies can play a big part,” said Vanessa. “Many people use the hospital or have friends or relatives who have been treated here and they want to give something back.”
