Commuters snap up savings on rail travel incentive schemeFeb 18, 2019
They are receiving an initial 90% saving on their first month’s season ticket, with ongoing discounts for monthly and annual renewals.
The scheme, operated by SmartGo Milton Keynes and the train operator, is also providing travel offers on local buses, bike hire and other onward travel options around Milton Keynes to improve the options for commuters travelling to and from the station.
SmartGo Milton Keynes is part of a national membership scheme run by social enterprise Go Travel Solutions to provide employers and their staff with a range of transport benefits to make travel cheaper and more sustainable.
It has a growing number of offers on buses, trains, bikes and more, accessed through an online portal, producing benefits for both its ember organisation employers and staff.
Local employer members include Volkswagen Financial Services, Milton Keynes Council, Network Rail, Milton Keynes Hospital NHS Trust, Transport Systems Catapult and bicycle importer and distributor Trek.
SmartGo managing director Robin Pointon said: “These new savings for rail travel will help, we believe, to encourage many staff to opt for the train rather than using the car for work. Using the train will also minimise environmental impact and provide big savings for staff and employers.”
London Northwestern’s commercial director Andy Camp added: “We are committed to investing in and improving local train services and through SmartGo we hope to engage with local businesses to encourage more people to choose train travel for their commute.”
The franchise is planning a £1 billion investment in its trains and the network. Improved timetables are due to take effect from May and new trains coming into service in 2021 will increase capacity by 25%, he added.
“It is a great time for people to consider making the change.”
SmartGo Milton Keynes also has deals with Arriva buses, Halfords, Cotswold Outdoor and Sixt. It has also agreed discounted fares with the on-demand transit service ViaVan, which takes multiple passengers heading in the same direction and books passengers headed in the same direction into a shared vehicle.
SmartGo members receive a £10 credit – with current fares only £2.50 each, they get their first 4 rides for free.
Cllr Martin Gowans, cabinet member for public realm at Milton Keynes Council, said: “The travel discounts the platform provides its member organisations complements our own activities to encourage increased travel by more sustainable modes, reduce congestion and develop a more inclusive transport system in Milton Keynes.”
