College offers degree in shopping

Through its links with the city’s retailers the college has carried out extensive research on the needs of employers and is now offering specific qualifications to meet demand.

Chris Tomlin, manager of the college’s business and professional department, said: "Some managers in retail are earning as much as £100,000 a year – it is a serious business. We want to get the message across to young people that it is not just about serving on the shop floor: there are other fantastic jobs to be had such as roles in planning, merchandising, buying, finance, performance, forecasting, stock management, logistics, and display management."

From September the college is offering a First Diploma in Retail as well as a National Award in Retail. There’s also the opportunity for students to go on to do a foundation degree in retail while working in the industry.
