The government paused the electrification of the Midland Mainline north of Bedford and through Northamptonshire in June but has announced that the work will now resume.
The works will result in faster rail journeys from Bedford to Sheffield, which cover Wellingborough and Kettering.
The line, north of Bedford to Kettering, and the line to Corby will be completed by 2019, with further lines completed by 2023.
Wellingborough Chamber of Commerce president David Cross (pictured) said: “Finally, common sense has prevailed. This is good news for Wellingborough, good news for our people and good news for the local business community.
“Having a faster train service will further enhance our credentials as we seek to attract new and more business and businesses to the area.”
The work will be done by Network Rail, which manages the UK’s rail infrastructure and whose national headquarters are in Milton Keynes.
Secretary of State for Transport Patrick McLoughlin said: “As a one nation government, we are making sure every part of Britain benefits from a growing economy.”
