Franklins celebrates a milestone

Established in January 1982 by founders Michael Franklin and Keith Wyld, now managing partner and chief executive respectively, Franklins has established itself as the region’s most accredited legal firm.

It achieved ISO9001 quality status some years ago, holds the Law Society’s own rigorous Lexcel quality mark and has also secured the Investors in People standard.

Franklins is also a member of the Serious Fraud Panel and this year has been appointed to the Lloyds TSB Group Legal Panel for Commercial and Regional Large Corporate Work.

This latter achievement underlines the firm’s growing reputation locally, regionally and nationally as a specialist advisor on major corporate agreements involving business, land and property sales, acquisitions, refinancing, financial restructuring and large business overdaft arrangements.

Although the practice was started in Leighton Buzzard, the Central Milton Keynes operation opened in 1983 and its Northampton offices a year later. Today 140 staff provide assistance to businesses and private clients, with corporate work an increasingly important element of the firm’s activities.

With specialist advisors on employment law and human resources, debt recovery and patent protection, business start-ups and disposals, Franklins is well placed to assist any enterprise from fledgling firm to well-established corporate customer.

Technology has always been at the forefront of the legal firm’s successful moves to keep its services ahead of the competition and provide clients with unrivalled support. Franklins has pioneered a sophisticated on-line service for business clients to keep them in touch with progress on their case work 24 hours a day.

Special software allows a company to check on the status of debt recovery proceedings, the latest position in an employment law case or how close the exchange of contracts might be in a commercial conveyancing process – all at the touch of a keyboard.

The computer-based system is so sophisticated it can even be configured to provide clients with instant text messaging to alert them to important events such as the completion of a contract.

Intriguingly, the special software was not bought in but was developed by sister company FWBS Ltd, based in Towcester. The development work proved so successful that today its software products for the legal and accountancy professions are used in more than 400 locations.

A ‘Gold Partner’ of software giant Microsoft, it has access to early releases of the company’s software allowing Franklins to continue to pioneer the latest technology for the benefit of its clients.

Managing partner Michael Franklin believes it has been this forward-looking, high-tech approach, combined with staff development, which has been at the heart of the firm’s growth and success over the past quarter of a century.

“We have certainly been a pioneer in the legal sector, constantly searching for innovative ways to improve both contact with and the services provided to our clients,” he explains.
“We are now using the same approach to be among one of the first legal firms in the country to offer time- and cost-saving Home Information Packs to some of our private clients.

“But our commitment to staff development has also ensured consistency which is vital in terms of building and maintaining client relationships, and this is an equally big part of our past success and our plans for Franklins in the future.”
