BBC looks at new centre

The corporation is considering three options and the front runner is believed to be a new purpose-built media centre in Central Milton Keynes.

A BBC spokeswoman told Business MK that several options were being assessed. She added: “We are committed to coming to Milton Keynes – it is just a question of finding the right building. The BBC is currently considering a number of property options and is in discussions with a number of parties. But we hope it is going to happen in the coming weeks.”

The Media Centre (artist’s impression pictured) is the brainchild of MKTV founder and chief executive officer Jawad Siddiqui. He said: “Making Milton Keynes a key media centre for the region is essential for the future of our city.

“MKTV has brought together the best of city firms to make this proposal and it is now the option creating most excitement within the BBC. Milton Keynes has a history of innovation and MKTV’s proposed media centre with the BBC at its heart will be the key to creating new jobs in the 21st century.”

The BBC intends to base a new TV region around Milton Keynes. It will also house the studios of BBC Three Counties Radio, currently in Luton.

MKTV, which has signed a ten-year partnership agreement with the British Basketball League for exclusive broadcast and sponsorship marketing rights, is due to launch early next year. It had been expected to begin broadcasting this autumn.

Mr Siddiqui said: “This was largely due to three major commercial projects which are at advanced stages of negotiation.

“Building rich content for MKTV is a massive challenge and it is vital that we deliver to the expectations of our audiences.”
