Old Gaol appeals for funds

The Old Gaol in Buckingham, built in 1748, needs an extra £20,000 a year to meet its budget and is holding a series of events for businesses to explore how they could become involved.

Sponsorship opportunities are available, as is the ability to host corporate events, parties and product launches in a venue with a difference, said Pat Brook, chairman of the Old Gaol trustees. The Old Gaol relies on private funding and donations, as well as funding from Aylesbury Vale District Council, Buckingham Town Council and the National Lottery. But the funding gap must be filled quickly, said Mrs Brook.

“One of the problems is the value of the building, which means we have to find a lot of depreciation,” she added. “This is hurting our accounts and we have to increase our income. That is why we are appealing to businesses for their help.”

The Gaol closed in 1893 and was saved from demolition in 1993 by the Buckingham Heritage Trust. It then became a museum.

A transparent roof has been built over the former prison exercise yard, which has created a space suitable for corporate events. Mrs Brook said: “It is a lovely place to have a party.”
