The Office for National Statistics announced that the UK economy grew by 0.7% in the last quarter of 2013, the fastest rate of growth since 2007.
The announcement followed last week’s news that the national unemployment has dropped to 7.1%, the biggest fall since 1997.
The statistics for Milton Keynes also provided a positive outlook. In December the unemployment claimant count was 3,630, compared to 3,853 in November – a fall of 223 job seekers in just one month.
Milton Keynes South MP Iain Stewart said: “This is a real sign that the economy is on the move. In Milton Keynes and across the country the news is positive.
“As a city we have become vital to the national scene The government’s long-term economic plan is working but there is still a long way to go.
His Parliamentary colleague Mark Lancaster, who represents Milton Keynes North, added: “I am really pleased to see the national figures, which are a reflection of the hard work and commitment from people right across the country.
“The community in Milton Keynes are no exception. Every time I visit a business, charity or organisation I see the ambition and enthusiasm this city has.”
