The subsidy is being offered under the Plugged in Places scheme and will be offered until the end of March next year.
Milton Keynes is one of three areas, along with London and the North East of England, to successfully bid for government funding under the Plugged in Places initiative, to build a charging network for electric vehicles.
The government has allocated £230 million to encourage the sale of electric vehicles. As well as the subsidy available to businesses for charge points, from January 2011 all electric vehicles will qualify for a 25% subsidy – up to £5,000.
Manufacturers are already taking advance orders for vehicles. Earlier this year, Milton Keynes Council signed an agreement with the Renault-Nissan Alliance to ensure early stocks of the Nissan LEAF, due to launch in March, would be available in Milton Keynes.
Cllr Vanessa McPake, Milton Keynes Council cabinet member responsible for transport, said: "The idea of buying or leasing an electrical vehicle is becoming an increasing reality for people and businesses, and in Milton Keynes we are once again at the forefront of innovative ways of working."
