Milton Keynes-based Rok has teamed up with Oxford and Cherwell Valley College, Oxford Women’s Training and Women Builders Ltd, to offer placements to female students who complete their ‘Jobs 4 the Girls’ construction training course.
The two-year project offers up to 80 women training in basic introductory construction and building skills, as well as registration and preparation to sit the Construction Skills CSCS Health and Safety examination.
Rok is providing the women with ‘hands-on’ experience by linking up with Rok technicians on the company’s sites across Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
Former arts student Adrianne Cartwright (pictured) was the first apprentice to join Rok on work experience. She said: Having trained as a florist I decided to have a rethink about my career and undertook a six-week course with Women Builders.
“I have always been a hands-on kind of person and gaining work experience with a company such as Rok will give me a further insight into the construction industry.””
Rok area leader Mike Costello said: “”Rok has a number of female technicians and wants to encourage more women into the construction industry.
