The store, which opened in High Street in 1973, has agreed a new lease with Bedford Borough Council which means that Debenhams will remain a leading player in the town for the foreseeable future.
The council now hopes Debenhams’ commitment to the town will result in other high-profile businesses relocating to Bedford.
The store covers five floors and a total of around 75,000 sq ft. Debenhams head of property acquisitions Paul Managhan said: “We have a long history in Bedford town centre and we are delighted to extend our stay for the foreseeable future.
"Our High Street location has become synonymous with the town centre and we look forward to serving the people of Bedford for many years to come.”
Bedford Borough Council is planning an ambitious regeneration of the town centre, including revitalising the town’s High Street with the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Mayor Dave Hodgson (pictured) said: “It is equally important that we work hard to retain existing businesses, and I am delighted that Debenhams has made a long-term commitment to staying here.
“This is a great deal which secures a major retailer in one of the town centre’s most prestigious locations. For a nationally recognised brand such as Debenhams to commit to Bedford town centre proves that it is an excellent place to do business.
"We hope this news helps encourage others to follow suit.”
