The master plan for a 43-hectare development at Yantai, in north-east China, has been created by Bedford-based architects Woods Hardwick.
The brief also includes a mix of commercial and retail units, a hotel, school, nursery and clubhouse.
Woods Hardwick associate director Loi Phan and Chinese architectural design firm Jian Ke were asked to create architecture with a more European style.
Mr Loi said: “Given the dense population of China, the landscape has become predominantly high-rise so the brief was extremely refreshing.
“I wanted to make the transition from a high-rise, densely populated skyline to an open air situation. The open space, low walls and clear skyline from any direction are a world away from what has become the norm in China.”
Woods Hardwick’s previous commission in China was a masterplan and architectural ideas for the new Jilin Province Library and Exhibition Hall in Changchun City, which reached the final of an international competition in China.
