Official figures released last month showed that London Luton was the fastest growing major airport in the London area, increasing passenger numbers by 11.3% during the first six months of 2011. The airport handled more than one million passengers in July.
Among the most popular destinations, Palma in Mallorca came first, with the Hungarian capital Budapest and Malaga on the Costa Del Sol in second and third respectively.
The year-on-year increase is due to the launch of new routes by airlines flying from London Luton and the growth of Wizz Air and Monarch in particular at the airport.
London Luton managing director Glyn Jones said: “More business and holiday travellers have come through London’s fastest growing major airport due to the competitive airline partnerships we have attracted.
"We are now focused on further improving our infrastructure to ensure higher quality of service for our higher volumes of passengers.”
