Ofsted report is ‘a real boost for Bedford’, says college chief

“Teachers have excellent links with industry and use these effectively to develop high levels of industry-related skills, which prepare students skillfully for the world of work,” said the report.

The college was praised as Outstanding across all categories for its work with 14-16-year-olds from local schools – particularly important to college heads, said a college spokesman, in view of the proposal to launch a Technical Academy for 13-19-year-olds in September next year.

Overall, Ofsted inspectors rated Bedford College as ‘Good, with Outstanding features’. Last year, Ofsted praised the college’s care standards ‘ensuring Outstanding outcomes for young people’ at Shuttleworth College, which Bedford College has run since 2009,

College principal and chief executive Ian Pryce (pictured) said the college was meeting the demands of more and more people in the community.

“Since our last inspection we have taken on and improved Shuttleworth College, created The Bedford Sixth Form and massively expanded our apprenticeship work.

“The Ofsted report is very strong and confirms how well we serve our community.  There are 34  judgements, 4 of them Outstanding and 30 of them Good.

“This is one of the most consistently strong inspection reports in our sector.  It shows that Bedford College provides a very high standard of education whether you study at the college or in the workplace, whether you are aged 14-16, 16-18 or an adult.  We provide a high quality and comprehensive offer.

“I am particularly pleased that our work with secondary school age students was seen to be Outstanding across the board; that Ofsted said our teachers and managers have high expectations; that our students behave with maturity and respect, and that we have excellent progression to employment and university.

“It is also pleasing that Ofsted said our major projects have been very well managed  highlighting the investments at Shuttleworth College  and The Bedford Sixth Form.

“This is a report that is a real boost for our staff and an even bigger boost for Bedford.”
