The A5 will be given a new link road with the M1 near Dunstable. The dualling between Milton Keynes and Cambridge on the A428 will be completed.
Plans are also in place for a longer-term study of an Oxford-Cambridge expressway which would include Milton Keynes.
Nationally the government is investing in more than 100 new road schemes over this parliament and next, 84 of which are brand new after today’s announcement.
Over 1,300 new lane miles will be added by schemes being delivered over up until 2020 on motorways and trunk roads, tackling congestion and fixing some of the most notorious and longstanding problem areas on the network.
Milton Keynes South MP Iain Stewart (pictured, left) said: “I am delighted to see this investment going in locally and nationally. Roads are key to our nation’s future prosperity and sadly they have long suffered from under-investment.”
“This government has a long-term plan to secure the country’s future and this £15 billion roads programme is demonstration of that.”
Mr Stewart added: “For commuters and businesses in Milton Keynes the improvements between Milton Keynes and Cambridge and the future Oxford-Cambridge expressway will be a welcome boost, particularly for the growing distribution and logistical sector.”
The improvements in the government’s announcement yesterday (Monday) comes on top of the East West Rail Project and the dualling of the A421.
Milton Keynes North MP Mark Lancaster (pictured, right) has welcomed the inclusion of improvements to the A428 between Milton Keynes, Bedford and Northampton in the 84 schemes listed in the government’s road investment strategy.
“Being central to the Oxford Cambridge arc, this is great news,” said Mr Lancaster. “We have another plank in supporting the economic growth of Milton Keynes.”
Huntingdon MP Jonathan Djanogly chairs the A428/A421 Alliance, a group of 45 MPs, council representatives and councilors campaigning for improvements to the road network.
He said: ‘I am delighted that our government has now recognised the vital need to upgrade the A428.
These proposals are going to improve security for residents and also provide the infrastructure necessary to develop our local and regional businesses and indeed our prosperity moving forwards.
“Across this corridor, a great deal of work has gone into leading a strong campaign for a better A428/A421 and I am pleased to say that today’s announcement is the successful outcome of that sustained effort. Now we need to keep the pressure on for this project to be delivered as soon as possible.”
