MP takes up Keep Trade Local challenge

He has agreed to take part in the Keep Trade Local Challenge in which, for one week, he has to use as many local businesses as possible.

The challenge has been set by the Thames Valley region of the Federation of Small Businesses and takes place in week commencing July 29.

Mr Stewart (pictured), who represents the Milton Keynes South constituency, said: “I think the challenge is an excellent initiative to help promote the wide range of locally produced and sourced products that are available.

"Just as big supermarkets and other retailers have an important role in the local economy, so too is it essential to have vibrant local traders. I am very happy to support and take part in this challenge.”

The challenge was launched at a gala dinner in Bicester, featuring – appropriately – a menu exclusively of locally sourced food.

The challenge is to use as many local businesses as possible and for participants to submit their total spend to the grand Thames Valley total.

Every entrant will be in with a chance of winning a £300 cash prize.

FSB Thames Valley regional development manager Robyn Bourne said: “The FSB recognises that small businesses are the heart of the local community; they generate wealth, employment and opportunity.

“But with people working longer hours and the growth of convenience, one-stop-shopping and the internet, these places are at risk.

“By challenging people to use independent businesses and shops for one week the FSB hopes to encourage people use what is on their door step and make the most of the smaller businesses in the community.”
