MEP calls on firms to back university’s internship programme

Vicky Ford was speaking on a visit to the university’s Luton campus. She met with Professors Ashraf Jawaid and John Brewer who outlined the opportunities being made available to students after graduating.

The Conservative MEP pictured said: "The University of Bedfordshire’s record is really impressive. I have seen the graduates are in great demand with local businesses, with 92% going into employment or further education within six months of graduating.

“I hope the excellent work by the university’s internship programme continues. I would strongly encourage more local businesses to come forward and offer placements. Many other universities in the UK and overseas can learn from this work."

Professor Jawaid, the university’s deputy vice chancellor, explained to Mrs Ford that the successful careers support service and internship programme run by the university helps students into top jobs.

Last year the university funded 500 internships at local businesses to help the students to increase their employability and understanding of industry.

Professor Jawaid said: “This is a unique and fantastic opportunity for students at our university and we are pleased as it prepares our students for the real world of work.”
