Mayor’s visit supports Small Business Saturday

The visit is part of the national campaign to highlight the range of small businesseswhich this thriving market town has to offer.

The first of its kind in the UK, Small Business Saturday is a grass-roots national operation, backed by the government and all major political parties. The campaign looks to support small businesses in their communities through a variety of initiatives taking place across the country, on  Saturday and beyond.

The Mayor and Mr Smith will visit eight FSB members who are based in the town centre.

Mr Smith (pictured) said:  “I am really looking forward to introducing Cllr Dodswellto our members. Small businesses are the heart and soul of a community. Not only are you likely to get a better, more knowledgeable service from a small, local business  but money spent will recirculate around the economy.”

Cllr Dodswell added: “Here in Leighton Buzzard, we pride ourselves on our small independent retail sector that makes sure that our town centre has something unique to offer.  It is great to  be able to show my support by talking to them about how we can keep Leighton Buzzard busy, not just at Christmas but all year round.”

She and Mr Smith will visit:
  • Creighton’s Chocolaterie;
  • Making the Best Gift shop;
  • Bridge Street Photography;
  • A Touch of Class Hairdressers;
  • Love Mum  Dress Agency;
  • Martini  Italian restaurant;
  • Dillamores Furnishers Ltd;
  • Room no. 9 Gift Shop.

Mr Smith said: “We are delighted with the Small Business Saturday initiative which has ensured that the value of independent businesses is highlighted.

“We also want to use this as an opportunity to work with local authorities to look at issues such as business rates and parking charges. If they want their town centres to survive, they must ensure that consumers are not driven to use out of town retail parks because town centres are inaccessible.”
