Mr Whitbread joined more than 400 post-graduate students at the graduation ceremony, held at St Mary’s Church in Luton. A director of Whitbread plc for 29 years, Mr Whitbread was chairman from 1984 to 1992. He also served as a director of the Whitbread Investment Company and of the Sun Alliance Group.
He has been Bedfordshire’s Lord Lieutenant for the past 16 years, having been High Sheriff in 1972-73, and is a patron of more than 20 local charities.
