Entrepreneurs make the shortlist for national awards

The contest, now in its ninth year, recognises, supports and celebrates the initiative and dedication shown by new business in the UK.

Rick and Lisa Sanderson, who started buy-LOCAL.net, are now hoping to win the title and a cheque for £25,000.

buy-LOCAL.net is an online farmers market for local suppliers. The site offers local, free range, organic and fair trade groceries delivered in 100% biodegradable carrier bags to reduce packaging and waste.

The business launched in 2006 and directors Rick (pictured) and Lisa are now marketing their business model, technology and expertise as a franchise package throughout the UK.

Three are already in operation and a further three are being set up. buy-LOCAL.net is now an Associate Member of the British Franchise Association.

Buy-LOCAL.net is one of 60 companies to secure a place in the semi-finals. Their entry will now be considered by a panel of business experts who will select the top 25 start-up companies to go forward to the national judging.

The overall winner will be revealed at a black-tie gala dinner at London’s InterContinental Hotel on November 23.
