The scheme begins on May 5 and will apply to 3,800 red premium and blue long stay bays in the city centre.
Instead of putting money in a pay and display machine, drivers can use their mobile phone and the parking charge is charged to credit or debit card.
Pay and display machines will still be located throughout Central Milton Keynes and drivers can still purchase a ticket as normal.
Following a competitive tender process, Verrus UK Ltd has been awarded a 18-month contract to trial the mobile phone payment system on 3,800 spaces. Verrus UK operates with an experienced, locally-based management team, and is already operating in UK cities including Birmingham, Westminster and Newcastle.
Robert Goodman, centre director for thecentre:mk, said: “We welcome this new service which will allow visitors to top up their parking payments from wherever they are without the need to rush back to their vehicle. Any initiative which helps promote Central Milton Keynes as a regional shopping and leisure destination, such as Pay by Phone, will be invaluable in retaining and attracting new visitors.”
Business customers can have more efficient expense accounting, manage any number of vehicles on one account and lower the risk of receiving a Penalty Charge Notice, said a Milton Keynes Council spokesman.
Cllr Douglas McCall (pictured), Cabinet member with responsibility for Transport, said “Many residents, workers and visitors to Central Milton Keynes will benefit from this new service and it will lower the risk of them getting a parking ticket”.
