College unveils £80m development plan

A prestigious new development will boost business in the town centre and provide state-of-the-art training facilities for companies across the county

The new development, on the college’s Cauldwell Street site, will be a national showcase of architectural expertise in an area much in need of regeneration: the Southern riverside.

Business has welcomed the plans. Bedford College already contributes almost £60 million to the local economy each year. This major capital investment is welcome news at time when other town centre developments have been held up by the credit crunch.

Plans will be submitted in December 2008 and, if approved, work will begin in 2010.

College chief executive Ian Pryce said: “Bedford College is looking to the future with this major redevelopment that will offer the people of Bedfordshire an innovative learning environment for academic and vocational study and build on the College’s outstanding reputation as a centre of excellence in learning.”
