Can maker makes national awards final

Rexam, which is based at Tongwell, is among the finalists in this year’s Best Factory Awards.

The award programme that has been running for 18 years is organised by Cranfield School of Management in partnership with the magazine Works Management. The awards reward manufacturing excellence in the UK.

A total 13 factories from all over the UK are on the list for the final, which takes place next month in London. Among the contenders for the prestigious Barclays Factory of the Year Award are plants producing goods as diverse as speciality tea, microscopes and sweetcorn on the cob.

Awards director Dr Marek Szwejczewski said: “This year’s awards generated a high number of entries, all of a very high calibre. This is very encouraging for UK manufacturing showing the sector is very much alive and thriving even through the recession.

“All of the finalists have invested significantly in improvement activities over the past year and importantly have also continued to invest in their staff which will put them in a stronger position for the upturn."
