Airport shelves plans for new runway

Instead, it will focus on making the most of its existing site, parent company TBI has announced.

Chairman Demetrio Ullastres said that the draft Master Plan, issued for consultation in 2005, had been withdrawn. It had proposed a full-length replacement runway almost one kilometre south of the existing runway and with a new terminal.

“We will not be pursuing this option further,” he added. “We are committed to the delivery of facilities that meet the needs of our customers and at the same time fulfil our shareholder expectations.

“Therefore, we have decided that our proposals should focus on making the most of the existing airport site.””

The airport expects to publish its development proposals for the period up to 2015 later this year.
