New school prepares to open its doors

The school is the result of a structured merger of Bedford High and Dame Alice Harpur schools, run by the Bedford Charity (The Harpur Trust).

The new Bedford Girls Junior Schools will open for the new school year in September at the Cardington Road site. The senior school will transfer a year later with the two sixth forms merging in 2012.

Bedford Girls School headteacher Jo Mackenzie (pictured) said: “This is an exceptionally exciting time for the pupils, parents, staff and trustees. We are all really looking forward to delivering high-class education which truly reflects today’s schooling demands.

‘At every step of the merger process, we have been very careful to incorporate our superb legacy in education, to liaise closely with the community and to respect fully the opinions and needs of our current students and parents.

"It is my personal belief that our phased approach to the merger is the absolute best approach for everyone and provides a very sensitive progression with minimal disruption in the delivery of our first class education."

Considerable consultation has taken place since the decision to merge Bedford High School and Dame Alice Harpur School was taken in June last year.
