Back to school in search of a new career

It is using the county’s commitment to high teaching standards coupled with its lifestyle, location and quality of life benefits as a lure to bring in the most talented trainee teachers.

It also hopes to attract professionals looking for a change in career. People such as Chloe Buckenham (pictured), head of sixth form at Caroline Chisholm School in Wootton, who gave up a career in law to become a teacher.

“Head of sixth which was the job I always wanted when I made the switch to teaching,” she says. “This change also allowed me to utilise the skills I had acquired while training in law.”

The A Place to Teach campaign has got off to a flyer, with more than 2,000 visits to its www.theplacetoteach.com website and more than 30 applications for places at particiating establishments.

The campaign has been developed by Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership with the county council, schools and the University of Northampton.

Michael Thompson, teaching school manager at Fairfields Teaching School Alliance, says: “The county already has many talented teachers but with several new primary schools opening over the next few years, there will be a need for many more.”

Adds NEP head of communications Kate Dent: “Northamptonshire is passionate about improving educational performance and this collaborative campaign is a great example of our can-do attitude when it comes to making things happen.

"Given the interest so far, we are confident this year-round campaign has the potential to add significant value to the county council’s Race to The Top programme.”
